Here by Wislawa Symborska #NPM15 #poetry

Here  by   Wislawa Symborska
Translated by Clare Cavanagh & Stanislaw Baranczak

I can't speak for elsewhere,
but here on Earth we've got a fair supply of everything.
Here we manufacture chairs and sorrows,
scissors, tenderness, transistors, violins,
teacups, dams, and quips.

There may be more of everything elsewhere,
but for reasons left unspecified they lack paintings,
picture tubes, pierogies, handkerchiefs for tears.

Here we have countless places with vicinities.
You may take a liking to some,
give them pet names,
protect them from harm.

There may be comparable places elsewhere,
but no one thinks they're beautiful.

Like nowhere else, or almost nowhere,
you're given your own torso here,
equipped with the accessories required
for adding your own children to the rest.
Not to mention arms, legs, and astounded head.

Ignorance works overtime here,
something is always being counted, compared, measured,
from which roots and conclusions are then drawn.

I know, I know what you're thinking.
Nothing here can last,
since from and to time immemorial the elements hold sway.
But see, even the elements grow weary
and sometimes take extended breaks
before starting up again.

And I know what you're thinking next.
Wars, wars, wars.
But there are pauses in between them too.
Attention! ; people are evil.
At ease ; people are good.
At attention wastelands are created.
At ease houses are constructed in the sweat of brows,
and quickly inhabited.

Life on Earth is quite a bargain.
Dreams, for one, don't charge admission.
Illusions are costly only when lost.
The body has its own installment plan.

And as an extra, added feature,
you spin on the planets' carousel for free,
and with it you hitch a ride on the intergalactic blizzard,
with times so dizzying
that nothing here on Earth can even tremble.

Just take a closer look:
the table stands exactly where it stood,
the piece of paper still lies where it was spread,
through the open window comes a breath of air,
the walls reveal no terrifying cracks
through which nowhere might extinguish you.

National Poetry Month--Finally! #npm15 #poetry

Most of you know I've been occupied with the blog tour of my latest book and so I didn't have the time or space for National Poetry Month posts, which is sad because I love poetry! I got an MFA in poetry, I love it that much.

So here is one of my favorite:

Wild Iris by Louise Gluck

At the end of my suffering
there was a door.

Hear me out: that which you call death
I remember.

Overhead, noises, branches of the pine shifting.

Then nothing. The weak sun
flickered over the dry surface.

It is terrible to survive
as consciousness
buried in the dark earth.

Then it was over: that which you fear, being
a soul and unable

to speak, ending abruptly, the stiff earth
bending a little. And what I took to be
birds darting in low shrubs.

You who do not remember
passage from the other world
I tell you I could speak again: whatever
returns from oblivion returns
to find a voice:

from the center of my life came
a great fountain, deep blue
shadows on azure seawater.

Three Stiffs with Picks: Can you name their songs? #giveaway

In Jesse's universe, there is a Necronite band called Three Stiffs with Picks. She loves it and I imagine the "stiffs" really playing up their NRD condition by looking like old school zombies. (see below)

I stole this picture from here.

So my question for the day:  What are some song/album titles for Three Stiffs with Picks? I want to do more with the band  and their music in future books, so if you come up with a great title, I'll totally credit you in the next book. So give me your best shot!

Jesse Couldn't Stop for Death #blogtour #giveaway #npm15

I was somewhat disappointed that I'm missing out on the National Poetry Month opportunities to post poems, given my blog tour of Dying for Her. But today I decided to combine the two with--you guessed it!--a poem about dying.

Because I could not stop for Death - Emily Dickinson (1830 - 1886)
Because I could not stop for Death,
He kindly stopped for me;
The carriage held but just ourselves
And Immortality.
We slowly drove, he knew no haste,
And I had put away
My labor, and my leisure too,
For his civility.
We passed the school, where children strove
At recess, in the ring;
We passed the fields of gazing grain,
We passed the setting sun.
Or rather, he passed us;
The dews grew quivering and chill,
For only gossamer my gown,
My tippet only tulle.
We paused before a house that seemed
A swelling of the ground;
The roof was scarcely visible,
The cornice but a mound.
Since then 'tis centuries, and yet each
Feels shorter than the day
I first surmised the horses' heads
Were toward eternity.

How Would You Like to Die? #giveaway #freebooks

1983: Truls Hellevik, a diver undergoing decompression aboard the oil rig Byford Dolphin was accidentally exposed to an eight-Atmosphere change in air pressure, leading to instantaneous massive expansion of his internal bodily gasses, causing him to explode into many small parts which rained down upon the rig; official investigation of the incident led to changes in some diving-bell resurfacing procedures.

2007: Humberto Hernandez, a 24-year-old Oakland, California, U.S., resident, was killed after being struck in the face by an airborne fire hydrant while walking. A passing car had struck the fire hydrant and the water pressure shot the hydrant at Hernandez with enough force to kill him.

2010: Mike Edwards, 62, was a founding member and cellist for the band ELO; he died when a large, round bale of hay rolled down a hill and smashed his van while he was out driving

2011: Jose Luis Ochoa, 35, died after being stabbed in the leg at an illegal cockfight in Tulare County, California U.S., by one of the birds that had a knife attached to its limb

2013: João Maria de Souza, 45, of Caratinga, Brazil, was killed by a cow that fell through the roof of his house onto his bed while he was asleep.

....Yes, I'm that person who sits around reading about strange and unusual deaths all day. Why? Because when you have a character who dies for a living, you have to know what to expect. Since researching Dying for a Living, I now know all kinds of random bits of information (i.e. your chances of dying in your kitchen, bathroom, or in a car are high) pertaining to what kind of deaths Jesse is most likely to encounter on the job and what she might have to work around when saving that person's life. (Though how she'd prepare for a falling cow, I've no idea).

So today's question:

What kind of death replacement would you like to see Jesse do?

What kind of death would you like to be saved from?

#Mondayblogs: Jesse Sullivan fans, I'm taking questions #giveaway #blogtour

Happy Monday (or not).

Last book tour I was able to have a Live Q & A for the Jesse Sullivan fans who had questions about the lastest book, or what was coming next for Jesse and the gang. However, this month has been hard on me health wise (migraine, sprained neck, respiratory virus) and so I'm going to have to do something a little different.

Please ask me any questions you have about Jesse, the gang, or the series (or anything else that comes to mind) in the comments below. I will make a vlog answering all the questions and share it ASAP.

In the meantime, here is a live Q&A from my reading at APSU in February:

Talk to you soon! :)

Listen to This: Brinkley's #YouTube #Playlist #giveaway #freebooks

It is hard to make a playlist that perfectly  portrays your character. When I thought about making Brinkley's playlist (my protagonist from Dying for Her), I knew it would be an intersection between his bluegrass roots and his classic rock adolescence/adulthood.

This is what I came up with. Enjoy!

Before you go, don't forget to interact with the rafflecopter for your chance to win signed books, swag, and a $100 Amazon giftcard.
