3 Tips for Writers #amwriting

1) Develop a daily writing habit. It doesn't matter if you write only 100 words a day or 3000. But you should sit down at your computer every day and work on your story/stories. This will train your brain to the task and create the discipline you need to write fiction.

2) Commit to finishing things.Neil Gaiman: “Writer advice... Write. Finish things. Go for walks. Read a lot & outside your comfort zone. Stay interested. Daydream. Write.”

While all of this is good advice, I particularly want you to note the "finish things" portion of this advice. It is very tempting to get distracted by the next shiny idea that comes along when we are in the middle of project. It happens to us all. But it is very important that you don't jump ship every time, or you will find that you are often swimming in the ocean without really getting anywhere.

I recommend that you create an outline for every project early on (when you are still excited and invested in the project) and when the days get hard or the shiny idea arrives, stick to your outline. Imagine your best Hagrid from Harry Potter voice: Stick to your outline, Harry. Stick to your outline.
Rely on your earlier, more energetic self to carry you through to the end.
3) Read.In order to be a good writer, you MUST be reading. Read books in your genre for inspiration. Read books outside it for fresh perspectives and maybe learn some tricks! Almost any writer will tell you that reading is paramount to writing and you can't have one without the other. But I like how Stephen King has put it, "If you don't have time to read, you don't have the time and tools it takes to write."

Wishing you a productive writing week,
Kory

She is only good at one thing --killing #Tuesdaybookblog

There's still time to preorder my latest Lou Thorne Thriller, Under the Bones. Sequel to the supernatural thriller, Shadows in the Water.

Louie Thorne is good at only one thing. Killing. She knows peace only when she kills and this relentless thirst drives her to hunt the worst crime lords in the world. But when her cancer-stricken aunt makes a dying wish, Louie is torn between her own dark nature and a promise made to the only family she has left.

Enter Konstantine, bastard son of the crime lord who killed Louie's family, and now the leader of the Ravengers—a ruthless crime faction ruling from Florence's underworld. He didn't rise to power without making enemies and now one of those enemies has made Konstantine the most hunted man alive. Konstantine's only hope of surviving the international chase is to trust the woman who almost killed him.

Will Louie embrace her thirst and protect her old enemy, Konstantine? Or are the bonds of blood stronger than revenge...

Learn more about Under the Bones, a  "twisting, fast-paced tale"  here.

A New Read for Vampire Fans #Fridayreads

Summary
With her home and heart in ruins, Jenna is none too keen on the idea of helping the Duke of House Lilith—the man she holds responsible for everything wrong in her life. But when the Vampiric High Council summons Ursula, Duchess of House Lilith and Jenna’s unsuspecting grandsire, to a trial where she's to stand accused of murdering her sire and abandoning her depraved scions, the duke is eager to strike a deal. If Jenna helps him protect Ursula, he will keep her darkest secret and put in a good word with the adoptive sire the queen assigns to her. Oh, and return her guns—provided she doesn’t use them on him.

Another great installment. If you've read and enjoyed the first four books in this series, you will enjoy this installment as well. I'm loving the progression of Jenna's story and can't wait to see what develops with the duke. The vampire royal family intrigue is also a lot of fun. Enjoy!

The New Sarah J. Maas book is here! #Tuesdaybookblog

Happy Book Birthday, SJM!

I know you're waiting for your baby to arrive, and that's pretty special, but I'm just so excited for this book!
ACOTAR fans will understand what I mean!
Narrated by Feyre and Rhysand, this bridges the events in A Court of Wings and Ruin and the upcoming novels in the series.
Feyre, Rhys, and their close-knit circle of friends are still busy rebuilding the Night Court and the vastly-changed world beyond. But Winter Solstice is finally near, and with it, a hard-earned reprieve. Yet even the festive atmosphere can't keep the shadows of the past from looming. As Feyre navigates her first Winter Solstice as High Lady, she finds that those dearest to her have more wounds than she anticipated--scars that will have far-reaching impact on the future of their Court.

Over 20 Free Books! Yes! #givingback

My donation to the English-language library in Angers, France arrived safely this week. Woo! I'm so glad that I was able to donate over twenty diverse YA books to their growing collection (including my own!) for French readers interested in English.

Read on kids!

I feel that it's really important for writers to not only produce great books for their fans to enjoy, but to also be advocates in the reading community. Get books into people's hands. Cultivate a world, an attitude, and an environment that makes reading enjoyable and accessible.

I'm still learning how to do this --but have been trying to seize these opportunities when I can.

Have a great idea for a bookish donation/act of kindness? Let me know by replying in the comments below. I'd love to hear your ideas!

Midnight District - A Review @Angela Roquet

Welcome to SPERO HEIGHTS...

a quaint little town full of secrets and second chances, where supernaturals who have lost their bump in the night go to recover. Tucked in the wooded Ozark Mountains, the humans are rarely cause for concern, but the citizens of Spero Heights have enough troubles of their own.

Graham Pierce, the beloved mayor of Spero Heights, has finally returned home… but he’s not alone.

After a wild vampire chase prompted by one of Dr. Delph’s visions, he stumbles across an apocalyptic affair resulting from his failure. The vampire in question is dead, leaving a curiously strong vampling in his place. Graham can’t explain his fascination with her, and he has no idea what bringing her back to his quiet little haven in the Ozarks could mean for him or for all of Spero Heights.

Eliza Wilson shouldn’t have gone to her ten-year class reunion. Certainly not right after losing her job, and most definitely not after being served divorce papers by her husband’s attorney and latest conquest. When her high school stalker corners her in the parking lot for a little love bite and she wakes up with a more literal thirst for vengeance, that’s the last straw. Hell hath no fury, because she brought it all back with her.

Kory's Review

I've been following Graham's journey since Book 1 of this series, Blood Moon--so I'm excited to see how his storyline turned out for him, and to see him meet his match. It was great to see familiar faces and to learn how the town continues to grow and change. It was also awesome to see the crossover with Roquet's Blood Vice series--my favorite of hers. The duke makes an appearance here--and this little taste of him just wasn't enough. It makes me desperate for Blood Vice 5 and the inevitable romance between him and Jenna.

As ever, my only complaint is that this book is too short. I would love to spend more time in Spero Heights with Selena (<---my fav character) and crew, but I will always be happy to return when I get a chance. And since the next book is going to focus on her--I'm psyched!

#Fridayreads - Thicker than Blood by @AngelaRoquet

Blood Vice Book 5

Revenge. Jenna had thought she wanted it before but it’s nothing compared to the scorching ire she lives with now. With her home and heart in ruins, she’s ready to repay the favor. The duke has taken her in, but not out of the kindness of his heart. The lavish suite and full-service harem at her disposal are not enough to disguise the setup for what it is: a gilded cage.

As the Midsummer’s Eve Ball draws near, where the queen has promised to announce Jenna’s new sire, Jenna plots to bring House Lilith to its knees. Starting with Dante Lilosa, the man she blames for everything wrong in her life. Blood family or not, she’s determined to see him pay for his crimes…unless Ursula, the returned Duchess of House Lilith, makes Jenna pay for her sins first.

Welcome to Castle Cove - Cover Reveal! #comingsoon

Welp. I just can't sit on this any longer. It's toooooo pretty. (Bonus points if you can spot the eyes.)

This cover is for my newest series about a special town, Castle Cove, and its special (read: dangerous) residents. It's dark and delicious and so complicated that I think I'll be coming back to play here often over the years. (Books and books worth of material here).

The first three novels in the chute will all hopefully hit the shelves this year: Welcome to Castle Cove, Night Tide, and The Wayward Woods.

More info soon! In the meantime, let's just appreciate the eerie silence of driving down a highway at night. Moon full. Headlights stretching into the darkness. And the sound of waves beckoning you closer...

So Your Mother Disappoints You #WednesdayWisdom

So Your Mother Disappoints You

And it's hard not to take it personally.
She drinks a twelve pack and drives,
45 miles in the wrong direction, away
from the elementary school where
you sing a song about a heart
while yours is breaking. Alone
overlooking the sea of faces
you don't know. Or Thanksgiving
when most children gather around
the dinner table, say grace and thank you
for the mothers who spoon out greens
and cranberries onto white plates
while you walk into the jailhouse.
Hands up, pat down, and the plexiglass
remains between you. When she calls
to say she can't leave him because
she has nowhere to go. Yes, it's hard
not to take it personally in a world of
1000 choices--and not one of them is you.
                                 …
But then I think of the valley, the forest
rich with life, though trapped in the canyon.
Lightning strikes there often, a brush fire
springs up, sweeps through the pines.
Animals are killed, a river polluted
the sky darkened with ash. One could say
terrible, tragic when considering
the burned paws, the lives lost.
Or one can see the wisdom in it. The burn
is needed. The burn brings growth.
The burn is the only reason the valley thrives.

Welcome to Castle Cove #comingsoon #fridayreads

Hi everyone!

I know it's been a minute since I posted anything fun on the blog and I'm sorry about that!

First it was the holidays and now it's because I'm hard at work writing the next adventure for you. In addition to working on the next Shadows book (titled: Under the Bones) I'm working on a new series, focusing a special supernatural town that you can only find by "invitation."

Better yet, it's a Choose Your Own Adventure book (but not using CYOA for trademark reasons).

Here is an excerpt:

     Someone screams.
My heart rockets in my chest, flooding my limbs with adrenaline. I sit bolt upright on the sofa, coming out of the doze.
For a moment, all I can do it sit there, in the dim light of my living room, wondering if maybe someone just saw a spider in the adjacent apartment, or if I’m hearing the television a floor below.
I sit very still, as if my movement would scare away the noise.
The scream comes again. It’s high, frightened and definitely a woman. And definitely from the street below.
It's a sharp, bone-rattling scream full of unmistakable pain. Whoever she is, she is frightened and hurting and in need of help.

Choose:
-Get up and investigate
-Call the police

So this is just a taste obviously, but I was hoping you guys could help me decide on a name for the series. Welcome to Castle Cove is the title of the first book, no worries there. But I'm having a hard time picking the subtitle.

It needs to convey the interactive aspect of the novels - the fact that the reader is picking the direction of the story themselves... and that several stories are possible. Some subtitles I've included are:

 - Design Your Destiny
 - Down a Dark Path
 - Choose Your Curse
 - Pick Your Potion
 - Fate or Fortune

I've listed all the options I could think of and I'll hope you'll let me know in the comments below if you like any of these. And if you have a good one, I hope you'll throw it in too! Again, remember that Choose Your Own Adventure (and perhaps others) are trademarked, and therefore unusable.

So happy to have you be part of this!

Kory

How you can get more books for less $ #amreading

Hi everyone,

I received a lot of positive feedback from fans thanking me for creating the Dying for a Living Boxset Volume 1, as a way for people to get multiple books for a lower price.

To keep the fun going, I've done it again! Here is a boxset (which I'm appropriately calling Dying for a Living Boxset Volume 2) with four books inside. Individually, the books come to $15.96. But the bundle is much cheaper than that (Retail $9.99).

However, until the release (Tuesday, January 16), the special preorder price is just $4.99. That's $1.25 a book--and then you can find out how the series ends! :)

Hope you enjoy the bundle and it brings you many hours of fun fantasy reading.

Until next time!

Kory
